    Hi Balakrishnan and Eashwer,

    I am unable to maintain the upcoming concerts in bangalore page on this blog due to my being in Chennai these days. I will try to keep it as much updated as I can. However, the following are two websites you can check daily in the morning to at least know about any concerts that happen on that day:

    1) http://www.hinduonnet.com/ – Click on Karnataka on the left side under States. Under the heading Bangalore, click the “In Bangalore Today” link and scan through the listing for carnatic concerts.

    2) http://www.deccanherald.com/ – Click “In City Today” link under Infoline on the left side of the page and scan the listings for carnatic concerts.

    Apart from this, when you go for a concert, you can look for notices about future concerts that are either kept at the reception or distributed during the concert.

    Hi Ram, Do you include only established artist’s schedules(for the december season) or accept young upcoming artists schedules as well? I know this young artist, who is a disciple of late.dr.s.ramanathan and late vairamangalam lakshminarayanan, singing at 5 – 6 sabhas this year. I can send you her details, if you are interested.

    Venkat,

    I think the best way would probably be to keep checking periodically with a few big organizations that organize such concerts. Also, when you go to a concert, be on the look out for notices that are circulated or kept for the public. They act as very good sources that let you know about concerts in advance.

    I was tracking Bangalore concerts till I was there and posting it on this blog. There might be others who might also be doing it and posting it on the web.

    Amazing work here. Thanks a lot.

    I am based in Bangalore. My friend and I are planning to come to Chennai this weekend for some concerts. I have never been to Chennai season before. I don’t have any ticket for any concert. So, is it okay if I land in Chennai Saturday afternoon and try to go for the concerts ? I mean, do you think it is a good idea to take this risk and come all the way to Chennai, my worry being the availability of tickets. :-)

    These are some of the concerts which we want to attend:

    * 30th Dec : 4.30 PM – Bombay Jayashri (Vocal) @ Narada Gana Sabha Main Hall, TTK Road
    * 30th Dec : 7.30 PM – T.V. Sankaranarayanan (Vocal) The Music Academy Main Auditorium, 168, T.T.K.Road
    * 31st Dec : 10 PM – Balamurali Krishnan, Brahma Gana Sabha.
    * 31st Dec : 5 PM : Kadri Gopalnath
    * 1st Jan : 10 AM : T.N. Shesha Gopalan
    * 1st jan : 6 30 PM : KJ Yesudas

    Hi Shyam,

    Thanks for your appreciation.

    The music academy concerts are priced at Rs. 300 & 400 (for the seats in the auditorium) and Rs. 50 and Rs. 100 for the balcony seats. Rs. 300 and 400 tickets are available usually. It is the 50 and 100 ones that get sold out. So I would suggest that as soon as you land, you visit both Narada Gana Sabha and Music Academy to buy tickets. They are 10 minutes apart from each other even if you walk from one to the other.

    31st Dec 10AM is the young Master Balamuralikrishna I think. He sings well. That concert should be free.

    5PM Kadri Gopalnath concert tickets should also be available. If not Rs. 50, you should be able to get the Rs. 100 one at the venue.

    1st Jan 10AM TNS shouldn’t be much of a hassle from the ticket angle.

    6:30PM Jesudas concert …. well MFAC is one hall where a lot of crowd comes. So I would suggest you get the tickets either in the morning itself or enquire the previous day if they give tickets one day in advance.

    Let me know in case you require any other info.

    The concert is taking place at Chinmaya Heritage Centre, 13th Avenue, Harrington Road, Chetpet at 7PM on 6th Jan 2007. Tickets should be available at the venue.

    Dear Sri S.S. Iyer,

    If you are referring to the links that I have provided on the right hand side, then Sanjay Subrahmanyan’s name doesn’t even figure in there as I don’t think he has a functional website. I have tried to give links to as many artists’ websites that I know of. If you can point me to links of other artists’ websites, please do so and I will be more than happy to include those.

    If you are referring to the concerts I attended whose experience I post on this site, then I don’t think your question is valid as one look at the list of artists whose concerts I have written about would tell you otherwise.

    Please let me know in case I didn’t understand your question properly.

    I was browsing thru the net to know sites on carnatic music when i stubled upon you blog..I must confess i am throroughly impressed by the way you have organized your blog and the quality of information available in the same…I too am based out of chennai…

    Ram could you please refer me to some specific links wherein i can listen to mridangam “Thaniavarthanas”..I have learned it for 4 years but not fully into it now due to official commitments….However really keen to hear some quality pieces…

    I cannot readily recall any specific link for taniavartanams. There should be a few audio files available on http://www.sangeethapriya.org . There are also some video clips of taniavartanams on youtube (Sri Palghat Mani Iyer’s, Sri Umayalpuram Sivaraman’s etc). You can find them by searching for keywords like “mrudangam”, “mridangam”, “umayalpuram” etc.

    I am sure you know that when searches on google for some carnatic piece, your blog certainly shows up.

    I wanted to check if you could recommend good teachers in Hyd. I learnt for several years from Malati Padmanabha Rao who is no more now.

    Hi Aparna,

    I have never sung in public or in front of friends before ….. so the person who sang the Roja song you mention must be someone else. Your name however sounds very familiar. Were/Are you associated with ISB, Hyderabad by any chance?

    My knowledge about music teachers in Hyderabad is very very poor since I spent just a year there, that too locked up most of the time outside the city, in Gachibowli. However, if my memory serves me right, Hyderabad Brothers and Hyderabad Sisters live somewhere in Secunderabad and Hyderabad respectively (see how great my memory is …. so tough to remember that Hyderabad Brothers and Sisters live in Hyderabad ;-) ).

    As for the music season, most sabhas are yet to release their schedules. The Music Academy has released it’s schedule and I have listed the same. Will keep updating the list as other sabhas release theirs. The schedules, once released, are mostly final, unless circumstances force otherwise.

    Unfortunately I didn’t record the concert.

    IIRC, there is a commercial release of Smt. Vedavalli that features only Pasurams. I will search for the same and let you know the name of the CD and the recording company.

    Since I live in Chennai presently, I am unable to track Hyderabad events. I tried tracking Bangalore events from Chennai for some time and found it very difficult to keep the list updated from here. Hence I don’t post events of any other cities other than Chennai as of now.

    Also, a quick question. How do I get a membership at the Music Academy. Is this like an exclusive country-club invitation only membership or can I just apply? Thank you in advance.

    I live in US. My kid is learning carnatic music. Im looking out for collection of
    “kutrala kuravanji” songs and “thriupughazh”. My husband might visit india. If you can suggest me CD/DVD of artists who have putforth their album specifically on this will help me.

    BTB RAM – I have small wish to pass on For Parents (carnatic lovers) in general: Pl listen to VISMAYA of KANNIKS (collection of muthuswamy dhikshitars western note compiled songs) which we happen to hear in arshavidyagurukulam – its really good, kids will pick up the verse and the song like “twinkle, twinkle”
    This is just a humble suggestion.

    With the help of google – cud get hold of
    Kutrala kuravanji padalgal by various arists of SAREGAMA – its listed in chennai online.
    Is there anyway I can know abt its quality. It doesnt give much description.

    Anyhow for both I will ask him to chek out in Giri trading as its nearby. Thanks for the input.

      Hi Dhruv,

      Where are you located? I suggest you check Mudhra’s artist directory (available in music stores in Chennai) and find out which artists are located near your place. You might have to talk to a few to find out whether they will teach from basics, how much they will charge etc

      Though this is usually the dull period of the year with respect to musical activity in Chennai, there is still plenty going on. Please keep checking the Concerts in Chennai page on this blog or the local newspapers (The Hindu) after you land and you should get the listings of kutcheris.
