Given below is a list of carnatic music concerts in Chennai. I will keep updating the list as frequently as possible. The list is as per information received from different sources. Some of the programs might change without my getting to know about the same, in which case, I will not be able to update this page with the changes. I have put a ? wherever I am not sure of the timings (mostly these concerts should be in the evening). A list of sabhas with address and phone no is given at the bottom of this page.

looking forward to your review on the saturday’s tmk concert!
From a rasika, who listens to carnatic music for the sheer bhakti it evokes rather than the intricasies involved, i would reckon that saturday’s concert by tmk fell slightly below expected standards. not so much in the rendition or the quality but with regard to his state of mind. He seemed quite listless and one would think, overwhelmed perhaps by the nostalgia evoked by the day , being M.S’s 90th birth anniversary. The Kambhoji main piece was mellifluous to say the least.
hi,
can you please inform me where can i learn veena around west tambaram?

Thanks,

Hi Sooriakumar,
Whatever concerts I know of during this period are already listed above. At present, I am not aware of any other source for getting information about the same as the date is a bit too far in the future. I will keep posting whatever additional information I get on this page.
Ram
HI
we are staying at near kasi theater.we want to learn karnatic song. any one class is there near to kasi theater pls let us know if come to know
Sure. Will do.
Hi,
I’m staying near Thiruvanmiyur(SRP Tools. Old Mahabalipuram Road). Is there any violin class near to my place?
Hi Seena,
Unfortunately I am not aware of anyone teaching violin in that region. Will let you know if I get any information. I would suggest that you get any musicians directory available in stores. There is one published by the organization Mudhra for example and contains the names and addresses of all carnatic music artists (including violin vidwans) in Chennai. You should be able to track someone in and around Tiruvanmiyur using that.
Ram

Sir / Madam,
I am working as computer operator in a private company in T.Nagar. My son V Ghanesh is interested to learn Mridangam.
We stay at Chrompet. For some time, he was learning Mridangam with Thiru Thillaisthanam Suryanarayanan. But as a dutiful father of my son, I could not make him to continue learning because of heavy fees.
He is now joined Jain College for B.Com and studied Vivekananda Vidyalaya upto plus 2. For his school / college studies,he has been helped by our well wishers through trust. For learning Mridangam, I request you to please put him under a Mridangam master or help him to learn by donation from trust
I request you to please help me in this noble work.
Thanks

Good to hear from you after a long time. Will update their schedule also.
Thanks,
Ram
That is very impressive information for music lovers! BTW, I heard that Vishaka Hari is in family way and her concert on Nov 2nd in Narada Gana sabha is cancelled – could anyone please confirm on the same? I was looking forward to it so much.
Thanks,
Aarthi
Dear Ram. Is there a concert by sikkil gurucharan in the Music Academy on the 18th of Nov.? I live in Maduraai and I would like to book my tickets.
Thank you .
Sita
Sikkil Gurucharan is performing along with Anil Srinivasan in Music Academy Main Auditorium on the 11th of November 2007 as a part of The Hindu’s November Fest. I don’t think he has a concert at the venue on 18th as there is some other concert in the Main Auditorium. I however don’t know if he is performing in the mini auditorium (Kasturi Srinivasan Hall) on that day.
Aarthi,
I am not sure about that. Carnatica still Vid. Vishaka Hari’s program on their list.
Dear Ram,
How are you? There is a change in my concert at Brahma Gana Sabha. Its at 4.00pm on 24 Dec 2007. If possible kindly make the correction and looking forward to meeting you at the venue.
Thank you.

Rajan ji,

Thank you Ram ji. Looking forward to meeting you this time. As a humble contribution to the field of arts I have compiled – not date wise – but festival wise listings of Madras Season concerts at http://artindia.net/madras2007/index.html Hope you will get time to have a look at this edition. Perhaps we could link each other too….
Regards,
GS RAJAN
i kindly request you to inform me which are the sabhas allow audio recordings
Anantha,
I have absolutely no idea on this
Ram
Dear Ram,
Thanks,
epadhu
Ram,
I deeply appreciate the trouble you take to provide this page. I have sent this link to more number of people than I care to remember. Perhaps, I might want to trouble you more. Please consider deleting expired dates more frequently, (If not daily, though I would appreciate that!) instead of the present once-a-month. Scrolling would become easy, that way.
Regards
Srikanth
Dear Srikanth,
Thanks for the suggestion. Have done the same. Will try to keep moving the past concerts out of this page as regularly as possible at least till the time the season ends so that the scrolling work becomes lighter.
Regards,
Ram
Just saw it. Thanks a lot, Ram

Dear Sri Balachander,
I will try to update the list with whatever remaining information I have by tomorrow.
Since I am not an avid follower of dance, I may not be the correct person to suggest you what CDs to buy. There are a lot of CDs available here in Chennai and it might be better for you to go through the collections at shops like AVM Sound Zone once you are here and buy the ones you like.
Ram
Nalini,
Will include the schedules for Lec Dems in the above list by tomorrow.

Lec dem schedule updated.
Thanks a lot for the information of the concert shedules…May God bless you.

Hai Ram,
Can you please send me the details of concerts in Mumbai for this year and early next year.Specially that of Dr. M.Balamurlikrishna.
Regards,
Nag
Hi Ram,
It was really very nice to see you and meet you in person. Our stay at Chennai was great. In all we listened to four very great concerts. The First one was the Malladi Brothers with Shri.U.K.S. your guru. The Second being that of Shri.Maharajapuram Srinivasan with son Shri.Ganesh
and again with your guru Shri.U.K.S. The Third concert was Shri.T.M.Krishna with your guru Shri.U.K.S.(that’s where we saw you for the first time) and the fourth concert was again Shri.T.M.Krishna
with Shri.Mannargudi Eswaran (where we again saw you and exchanged a few words). In all we had a wonderful musical weekend at Chennai. How blessed are the people of Chennai, to be amongst such musical greats.
Our visit to Chennai was mainly to get the visa for my son Karthik, who is heading to the U.S. for further studies. Though his work at the consulate took just a minute, we all happily stayed on and on for over five days, only to listen to some very good music.
As we could see most of the above mentioned musicians from very close quarters, one thing we could observe, and that was their simplicity. Can there be yet another person who is as great as your guru Shri.U.K.S. who is so simple, down to earth and always smiling. He literally made his mridangam talk. All the concerts were very nice and I have planned to come and stay in Chennai for a complete month of December next year i.e. 2008. May God bless all the musicians and help them perform better and better.
Please make it a point to visit us, when you are in Bangalore. All the best to you and your playing of the mridangam.
Dear Sri Nagabhushanam,
I unfortunately do not have details of concerts in Mumbai. Will get back to you in case I hear about Dr. BMK’s concerts there.
Ram
Dear Sri Vinayaka Prasad,
The pleasure was mine too. It was really nice interacting with you. Wishing Karthik all the best in his future endeavors.
Please do feel free to reach me and come to my home whenever you are in Chennai.
Regards,
Ram

Can you please include the details
I was planning to see Chennai during margazhi and to check out the concerts, I checked this list and I was just amazed seeing this list.First of all the fact that so many programmes are happenning in one city is one thing. The fact that theere is someone who has the patience and sincerity to list them that too so elaborately is another. And to add to all this the number of responses I see shows how many people are interested in watching this. I am happy to see all of these.Good Going!

Hi,
Pls try to update the schedule for Mamallapuram Dance Festival 2008.
Dear Sir,
My parents are at chennai this week, for today’s Aruna sairam concert at Music academy, they were unable to get the tickets. They came by 8.15 AM today at music academy counter, they said it is full.
Is there any way, i can get tickets. I need 4 tickets.
Since they came from Salem, i want them to enjoy this. Since there is no advance booking for this, we were unable to proceed further.
Expceting your guidance.
Rajesh.
Dear Rajesh,
I do not have tickets for the concert and neither do I know of anyone who might have spare tickets/ passes. I am hence unable to be of assistance here. It’s unfortunate that they went so early to the academy but still couldn’t get the daily tickets.
Ram
Hi Rajesh
There are other sabhas who give advance booking for daily programmes also. eg. on 4th Jan.Aruna Sairam is at Nungambakkam Cultural Academy, at Habibulla Road. Daily tickets would be available even tomorrow i think.

Dear Ram,
You are maintaining the site excellently. Congratulations.
I do not see any of your concerts review recently(may be a fortnight ??). Hope, you would keep coming with your lively reviews as well.
Have a great day.
gkg
Your reviews are still awaited.
Thanks Sri Gajendran for your appreciation.
I do not write concert reviews any longer. My earlier writings on this blog also were not intended to be reviews in the first place but only posts that gave the song lists and some details about the performance.
I will continue to write about lec dems I attend. There are a couple of them I have been wanting to post about for quite some time now and will do so soon.
Thanks Ram. I believe you still put reviews of concerts at rasikas.org
regards
gkg
I used to, but don’t any more
So you have reviewed giving your ‘reviews’ lol.
Dear Ram,
You are doing a yeoman services to the CM, Chennai. My hearty congrats. I am very fond of CM and I am learning in Delhi.
I wd b in Chennai on 6th April’08 and may I request you to suggest any concert worth attending on that day. Your list shows some unknown new names, hence this request.

I would suggest you wait till the morning of the 6th to see if any unannounced concerts spring up and if any familiar names appear. From the current list, I would probably place my bets on Sri Trivandrum Venkataraman’s veena concert, if you like listening to veena.

Dear Ram,
Thanks for your inputs. I am now back in Delhi after a hectic trip to Chennai.
On 06/04/08 around 5.45 pm I landed at Raga Sudha Hall with lot of difficulties to find. Piranmalai Annaswami was elaborating Thodi very nicely. His voice was appealing and he once/twice touched tara stayi Sa and showed some glimpse of Shuddha Dhanyasi during thodi alapana(sruthi bedham – person seated next to me told) . The piece followed was Taamadamen Swami. I really enjoyed that.
Then the Veena concert you had recommended. Mr. Jayaraman elaborated Mukhari(sub-main) and Thodi (thodi day !!) and both were good. I liked his mukhari elaboration very much.
Thanks once again for your kind responses. I have learnt quite a lot from these concerts. I am sorry for sending the lengthy message, b’coz of my enthu only.
ShukriyA.
Thanks Rizwan for sharing your experience. Unfortunately, you landed in Chennai during one of the driest musical periods of the year. Even if you had come a week later, you would have had far more choices with Rama Navami concerts starting everywhere. Hope you do return during musically rich periods of the year and enjoy much more.
Sir,
Nice to read your response within two minutes. Thanks a ton for your showing your patient reading and allowing my scribbling in your blog, generously.
I shall keep disturbing every & now then.
ShukriyA

Can pl tell me what is ‘Sarvadari’ means?
Thanks in advance
Sarva = all
Dhari = holding/bearing
So I think it should mean a year that holds all good things. Just a guess. I could be wrong. Will check with a few “learned” people and let you know.
Ram,
Would it not be split as sarva + aadhari (to mean prime for every thing)?

Gr8 job… Kindly keep going….:~)
Dear Ram,
What you’ve been doing is an absolutely incredible job indeed. I’ve referred this link to many of my friends & they too have quite appreciated it.
Knowing about the concerts much in advance enables me to schedule my work suitably, so that I can attend the concerts. Kudos to you.
I’ve one suggestion…. whenever you happen to know whether a programme is “All rasikas welcome” or otherwise, could you kindly include that also at the end of each concert. It’d be of great help to know if a concert is `Free’ or `Ticketed’.
Best Wishes,
Sampath
Thanks Sampath. Have indicated the same wherever possible.
Dear Ram,
Thank you so much. Thanks a lot.
I’m indeed grateful to you.

Hello, in the Dec season concert schedules, you have mentioned that the morning and afternoon concerts at the Music Academy are also ticketed. Arent they free? Or have they changed the policy for this year?!
Krishna,
They are free concerts. It was my mistake to have labeled them as ticketed and have corrected them. Thanks for pointing this out.
Ram
Ram, Shashank’s concert at the Music academy is mentioned as Vocal. It should be flute.
Thanks a lot for collating all this info and putting them together.
Hi,
When is the next concert of Priya Sisters likely to happen in Chennai and where?
there is a typo error in the schedule; 24Oct 2008 falls on a Friday; and not on Thursday; do change it from Thursday to Friday
Krishna & Guru,
Thanks for the catch! I have made the changes.
Ram
Sandhya,
I don’t know when their next concert is, as of now. Will include in the list above as soon as I get any info.

Hi Ram,
I hope to spend a week at Chennai during the season. I wish to attend Aruna Sairam’s concert at Music Academy and also the other concers at the Academy during the period. Is it possible to get tickets on a daily basis or should we procure a season one?Could you tell me how to go about it. Ten days back they told me to contact them in November. I wish to attend the ticketed ones.
Could you tell me how to go about it?
Hats off to you for answering all the mind-boggling questions from Rasikas -a Herculean task which you accomplish without any ado.Your last year’s list helped me to plan the concerts I wished to attend but Music Academy was out of bounds. This year I am targetting on it. Please help an old person out!
With best wishes,
Sita
If you are planning to attend concerts daily at the Academy for the entire week that you are here, then buying a season ticket might be the more convenient and safer option. You would have to work out if it is economic though. Last year, a limited number tickets for concerts at the Academy were either available from the previous day or the morning of the day of the concert. But they get sold out very fast for concerts of very famous singers.
The bottomline is that a season’s pass, though costly, would guarantee you a convenient and sure seat at the concerts.
Dear Ram, Thanks a lot for your prompt reply as usual. I have to consider if a season ticket is economically viable for me. I was unable to get ticckets on a daily basis, especially for renowned singers.
With best wishes,
Sita Krishnamoorthy
I could come across this wonderful link on sampradhaya bhajan video clippings of Alangudi Radhakalyanam: http://www.youtube.com/rkraman Let interested people visit and enjoy !

Dear Mr.Ram,
on 6th December Sanjay Subramaniam is performing for Karthik Fine Arts at Narada Gana Gabha Main Hall. At What is it ?. Your site shows 4.30PM. However Kutcheribuzz and artindia.net shows 6.45PM. which is correct?
Regards,
Ramesan
It is 6:45 PM. I have corrected the same.
Vid. Jayaprada Ramamurthy,
I have included the concerts in the above list and also made the correction for the Music Academy concert. Do let me know whenever there are additions and I will include the same too.
Wishing you a great music season ahead!
Regards,
Ram
My hearty congratulations on your excellent efforts in building a portal of updated information for rasikas and the artistes! great work!! accept my best wishes and I pray you continue your fine service!! I would be happy to see more info on ticket booking, season tickets, concert rates in future!!
Hi Ram,
On the above listings that show the program schedule for the Music Season 9th December shows 2 concerts of S. Sowmya but for different timings. Which one is correct?
regards
sandhya
Hi Ram,
The T.M.Krishna Kalarasana concert on Dec-4 is actually scheduled for Jan-4. Can you shift this entry down?
Thanks,
Girish.
Thanks Shri Vijayaraghavan
Sandhya & Girish,
Thanks so much for spotting these. I will rectify these and other errors, if any, in a couple of days time and also add schedules of a few more sabhas. Need to go through the entire list to check if everything is listed fine but am unable to do so due to really hectic time at work. Bear with me for a couple of days.
Ram
I found this website very useful to know the programs in the Chennai season. My daughter, Sharanya Balaji(child artist, disciple of Guru Smt. Vishal Ramani, USA) will be performing at the following places-
Dec 23rd – 5PM -6:30PM (Varasiddhi Vinayagar Kovil, Besant Nagar) thru’ TVG Academy of Indian Music and Arts *FREE* accompanied by Shri Srikanth(vocal), Shri Vedakrishnan(Mridangam), Shri Vasu(Nattuvangam), Shri N. Veeramani(violin)
Dec 31st – 7PM (Youth Hostel, Indira Nagar, Adyar) thru’ Hamsadhwani Sabha *FREE* accompanied by Shri Murali Parthasarathy(vocal), Shri M. Dhananjayan(Mridangam), Shri N. Veeramani(violin), Shri K.S. Balakrishnan(Nattuvangam)
Thanks
Done. The concerts have been included.
Awesome job Ram as usual. But sorry to again point out that 9th December has 2 Unnikrishnan’s concerts at different timings and different locations too. I know it is a tedious work to first collect and post the information but then your hard work should not go waste.
Regards
sandhya
Sandhya,
Thanks so much. I have corrected it now. The venue was the same, but I had listed it at 6:30pm and at 7pm. The correct time is 7pm.
Do let me know if you find any other discrepancies
Ram
Hi Ram,
Thanks for your prompt response. But I am again sorry to keep pointing out only mistakes. There are again 2 timings for Unnikrishnan’s concert on the 17th of Dec at YGP Auditorium.
I also want to ask you is this an updated list of all the concerts in the city or is it yet to be updated fully? The reason I am asking is Bombay Jayashree’s concerts are not avilable and also there are not many of Priya Sister’s concerts in the list. Since I am refering your site only everyday to get updates on the programs I noticed these concerts missing.
Thank you in advance
sandhya
Thanks Sandhya. I have corrected the double entries.
I still keep updating the list based on any new information I receive. Bombay Jayashree’s complete schedule is available and I have cross checked it with her web site. Whatever information I have about Priya Sisters’ schedule has been included.
Hi Ram,
Many thanks for this information and appreciate your efforts in collating this information single-handedly. Surprising that there isn’t a source for concert information besides the dedication of aficionado’s as your self.
I reside in Chennai (Kilpauk area) and would like to learn Carnatic vocals. If you have any recommendations of persons in around the area I would be obliged.
Sincerely
Vasu
Thanks Vasu.
I would suggest you have a look at Mudhra’s Artist Directory that is released every year. It has contact details and addresses of many artists and would enable you to select vocal teachers near your place.
Dear Ram,
Our concert scheduled on Jan 5th’09 at 5 pm is for the Raja Annamalaipuram Bhakta Jana Sabha (not Rama Bhakta Jana Sabha as i had mentioned in my old mail).
Can you please make the correction?
Thanks & Regards

Hi All,
When I entered Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan at 5:30 PM yesterday, the hall was almost full and people had to sit on the passages and the cement blocks. It was B. Kannan on the Veena followed by Sudha Raghunathan at 7 PM. It was flooded with people and many of them occupied the stage.
She started at 7:20 PM with a cheering varnam, Ka Vaa Vaa on varali. Followed by a wonderful alapana on “Sahana”. By then it was 8:15 and the tempo started coming down. Then I realised that the auditorium was almost vacant. Nothing impressive from Sudhan later. Few people were murmering that it would have been further worse on a weekday as the TV serial starts at 8:30 PM.
Sabha people should consider starting the concerts earlier and conclude before 8:30 PM.
Hi Srini,
:)
This is a reply for you message about how concerts should start early and conclude before 8: 30 pm. I would like to bring to your notice that the serials or Soaps are telecast throughtout the year and is running year after year. But the concerts are not that way which is why it is called as Music Season.
Those who are interested in the concert and the performance will sit through the concert without giving much importance about these always tearful serials. So people who want to cry everyday will even otherwise not come to concerts or their mind will not be in the concerts.
It is also the artist’s performance on any given day that ensures that the audience are seated without knowing the time.
Moreover if you look at the schedule above you would be able to see that all the Sabhas are packed from morning to evening and with more artists entering the arena every year it is only more difficult for the Sabha organisers to start and end early.
These artists are performing throughtout the season at a stretch and even their voices should be given a thought and given a little breathing space.
I’m sure the music rasikas will agree with me and i’m sure the serial rasikas will disagree with me.

sandhya

Hi Ram,
You are doing a very great job as usual especially when you have your own concerts it is very difficult to update the blog everyday. Hats off to you for your efforts.
I would like to talk about a couple of things about your comments on Maargazhi Raagam.
Your positive points like Superb Acoustics, no audience interference are all definitely added bonuses.
Regarding the negatives like showcasing the Thaniavarthanams in slipt screens could have been done. At the same time we should also note that this is a first time experience for everyone. The technicians, the singers, the accompanying artists as well as the audience.
The artists are the only people who have a deep knowledge about Carnatic Music. Whereas they lack the technical knowledge like how to position the camera and mic etc.
The technicians are people who have very good technicial knowledge but not much of Carnatic Knowledge.
And since this is a first time attempt which is laudable the mistakes are not too very obvious. The attempt to take Carnatic Music to the masses or to the people who dont come to sabhas has paid off. People who go only to the theaters were driven to see the movie based on the ads played outside the theaters and during other movie intervals. This would’ve been a great experiment for everyone who has worked and when they get the feeling that they are acting in a movie and not playing for a concert the accompanying artists are bound to be camera caonscious.
Mistakes are bound to happen but the efforts have definitely paid off. Had it been a recording of a live concert it would not have attracted such a huge response as how it has not. Mainly because people who went for the concert would not prefer to come to see it in a theater.
Old mamas and madisar mamis who confined themselves to the sabhas and temples were seen in huge crowds in the theater mostly inhabiterd by hipster crowds.
Definitely this is a very good attempt and more such attempts though not frequently are very much welcome.
And again hats off to Ram for you great effort and sincerity to you blog.
regards
Sandhya

I dont usually reply to posts but I will in this case. Ive been experiencing this very same problem with a new WordPress installation of mine. Ive spent weeks calibrating and getting it ready when all of a sudden I cannot delete any content. Its a workaround that, although isnt perfect, does the trick so thanks! I really hope this problem gets solved properly asap.
kindly mention whether the programmes at the Youth Hostel (Hamsadwani) this week is FREE or TICKETED????

Dear Ram,
As usual I have a request.A few months back I had been to a concert of Vijay Siva and he sang a Unjal Pattu which was pronounced in tamil as ‘usal’ on Venkatachalapathy. It was a ragamalika. It was a melodious tamil song with extraordinarily lovely lyrics. At my request he sang the same song at Lakshmi Sundaram Hall, Madurai again. Is there any way to find the composer?I did ask him and he mentioned some Iyengar. That night I searched and did find the song on the Net.The name slipped my memory and I do not have the contact details of the singer. Can you help me in some way to hear this song once again? Please help me out and tell me if this particular song is available in any CD released recently by him
Thanks again for all the posts. Living in a small town these posts are a boon to people like me.
God bless you for the service to Carnatic Music
Sita
Thanks for your appreciation.
Can you please let me know how the song starts? I can try searching the lyrics if you can tell me the starting words.
Regards,
Ram

Dear Ram, The composer of the Unjal Pattu is Divyakavi Pillai Perumal Iyengar.I am sure they sing his compositions in Vaishnava shrines. I liked Vijay Siva’s rendering, but I don’t mind anyone rendering it,even temple renderings. If you see the Net you will get an idea where to procure it. The sahityam and melody is haunting me.Sorry for the trouble.I will be delighted to buy a commercially released CD.

Dear Co-ordinator
I am using this site for the past 6 months. It has been really useful for sincere rasikas like us. It would be still fine, if you could publish important Muscial discourse, Bhajans, etc performed by eminent people like, Vital Das, Cuddalore Gopi Bagavathar, Udayalur Kalyanaraman etc.
Panduranga leela discourse by Sri Cuddalore Gopi Bagavather is a splendid experience to attend.

Hi Ram
Sorry, Just now I read about yourself. And your concert details. so kindly ignore my details about Bharat Sangeet Utsav. I am sure you definitely know that it is happening.
Dear Mr. Ram,
I am Sangeeth Gopal and hail from a music family.Am used to giving vocal concerts at various temples and sabhas in Kerala. Kindly request you to consider me for a concert in Chennai as it is my ambition to do a concert there. You may arrange accompaniments and am the least bothered for any financial benefits as I work with a Bank. I may be reached at 099619 84660 for any clarifications.
It is indeed a wonderful blog. I introduce myself as father of K. Sathyanarayanan, a 14 year old musician, trying to perform Carnatic music on Keyboard. I request you to kindly go through his website and if you feel you can list him in the artists list of your blog, please include his name also.
Thansk n brgds Krishnababu
Dear Shri Krishnababu,
Apologies for the delayed response. Have been traveling without blog access for quite some time now.
I have been going through Sathya’s web site regularly and have also attended his performances. Will surely include his name in the list of artists. Wishing him a great musical future!

Ram
