What a beautiful concert it was right from the word go !!!! Issues with the mic and speakers that were very apparent in the first song (varnam) were set right by TMK very quickly to make the rest of the concert enjoyable. The taniavartanam played in misra chApu tAlam by Sri Arun Prakash and Sri Purushottam was short, sweet and involved some intelligent use of simple mathematics while doing the kuraippu. Violin accompaniment by Sri Chandramouli was also of very good quality.

……..

I had to leave after the tOdi composition. The concert was supposed to start at 7 PM but instead started one hour late at 8 PM because the people who were giving speeches during the award/felicitation ceremony that took place before the concert went on and on for extended periods of time. Many in the audience were visibly frustrated.

Sri Guruvayur Dorai was originally supposed to have played the mridangam but he couldn’t come. So Sri Papanasam Ashok Ramani, who is known to us more as a singer, donned the mantle of the mridangist for the concert.

10) mangaLam mangaLam – suruttI – Adi

11) sarvamangala (slOkam) – srI

Shankarabharanam Alapana by TNS was very good; so was the hindOLam rAga AlApanA by T.N.S. Krishna. ArabhimAnam is one of the songs I like a lot. The version I have heard multiple times before is the one sung by Sri Neyveli Santhanagopalan. Though TNS sang it very well technically, I felt that the melodic aspect took a little bit of beating due to a lot of bhrigAs and a bit of mathematics in the sangathIs that were used in the song. The accompaniment was also not of very high quality and the artists didn’t look to be playing to their capacity.

Sri Srnivasan sung a lot of songs that his father Sri Maharajapuram Santhanam used to sing and rendered them well. The tanam in ragam tanam pallavi was not top class stuff though.

The pallavi line in the ragam tAnam pallavi “srI saraswati vANi kalyANi, rAgapriyE namOstutE” was structured as follows (A = aksharam): (starts 1A after samam) srI (1A) sara (1.5A) swati (1.5A) vANi (1.5A) kalyA (1.5A – ends at half of the Avartanam) Ni (+ gap = 2A) rA (1A) ga (1.5A) priyE (1.5A) namO (1.5A) stutE (1.5A) = Total 16A = total akshara count of one Avartanam of Adi tALam (2 kalai)

Captain is back

2006092200220201.jpg

The wait is over for captain fans. Captain is back with his latest movie “Perarasu”. Was reading about the movie in The Hindu’s Friday review ….. here are some very important points made by the person who wrote the article:

  • About Captain and his sibling in the movie: “One believes in the Law and the other in Justice (which need not always be the same)” … wow …. what a funda ….what a great one !!!! … and here is some more information … “Ambiguities there are — there’s no concrete difference between the twin heroes in body language or action. One tucks in his shirt the other doesn’t, and that’s about it. And stating that the only way to know one from the other is through a confidential mobile phone number is rather ridiculous!!!”
  • “Vijayakant looks comparitively trim and makes a solid impression”
  • “The costume designer has to be complimented for garbing the hero in sober outfits that become a high-ranking police official” …….. no grudges but I think this writer or the person who edited this article needs to at least clear a few GMAT sentence correction tests

9) vinAyakuni – madhyamAvati – Adi – thyAgarAja

10) pavamAna (mangalam) – sOwrAshtram – Adi – thyAgarAja

If there is one thing that would make me remember this concert at least for some time to come, it would be the beautiful rItigowla rAga Alapana. Detailed Alapana was also done for tOdi. The places in the rAga Alapana where OST held his breath to sing a set of notes continuously, as he usually does, were especially enjoyable. Sri S. Karthick on the ghatam was simply awesome and was the perfect match for mridangam maestro Sri Raja Rao.

On a day which had concerts by famous artists at other places, I had gone to this concert because of the theme and because I thought I will get to hear some rare compositions not in vogue these days and I must say that I wasn’t dissapointed. Smt Sumathi Krishnan rendered the songs well. But the sad part was that even the tiny Narada Gana Sabha Mini Hall was noticeably empty with only about 15 people present in all, who I guess were either organizers or were in some way or other, known to the artist.

TMK, as he has done many times in the past, enthralled the audience with a beautiful concert. His style of rendering the last portion of neraval and kalpana swaram in a continuous, full-throated way once again captivated everyone.

Detailed rAga AlapanAs were done for kAmbOji and kIravAni. The pallavi line “bramhai vAham kila sadguru krupayA” in the kIravANi RTP was structured as follows (A=aksharam): (starts 0.5A before samam) bram (1A) hai (1A) vA (1A) ham (1A) ki (0.5A) la (+ gap= 3.5A) sat (0.5A) gUru (1.5A) kru (0.5A) payA (1.5A). sAmA and kharaharapriya rAga AlapanAs were well executed. Graha bhedam was done in karaharapriya rAga AlApana taking madhyamam as shadjam to give harikAmbOji, gAndhAram as shadjam to give kalyANi and rishabam as shadjam to give tOdi.

The pallavi line “tAmarasa dalanEtri thyAgarAjuni mItri” was structured as follows (A=aksharam): (1A gap) tA (1A) ma (0.5A) ra (1A) sa (1A) da (1A) La (1A) nE (1.5A) tri (+ gap = 3.5A) thyA (1A) ga (0.5A) rA (1.5A) juni (1A) mI (1A) tri (0.5A). Chitravina Ravikiran @ Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai

Date of concert: 10th Sep 2006

Venue: Sri Krishna Gana Sabha Auditorium, Chennai

Chitravina: N. Ravikiran

Violin: Akkarai Subhalakshmi

Mridangam: Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman

Ghatam: T.V. Vasan

Khanjira: B. Shree Sundar Kumar

The concert started with a varnam which I missed as I landed late after shifting in from Bangalore to Chennai. The (partial) list of songs played by Sri Ravikiran is:

  • kadalE vADu – nArAyanagOwla – Adi – thyAgarAja
  • varanArada – vijayasrI – Adi – thyAgarAja
  • marivErE – Anandabhairavi – misra chApu – syAma sAstri
  • tatva meruga – garudadhwani – rUpakam – thyAgarAja
  • rAgam tAnam pallavi – sapta swara rAgamAlika pallavi in the 7 rAgAs pUrnashadjam, rishabapriyA, dEvagAndhAri, simhEndramadyamam, lalitapanchamam, dhaivatAngi and nishAdA (nItimati), chosen to have the names of the 7 notes viz shadjam, rishabam, gAndhAram, madyamam, panchamam, dhaivatam and nishAdam in their names. Talam chosen – Adi (2 kalai)

The concert was advertised with the sapta swara rAgamAlikA pallavi as the differentiator. The rAga AlApana was done in the rAgAs pUrnashadjam, rishabapriya, dEvagAndhAri and simhEndramadyamam. The tAnam was done in the rAgAs simhEndramadyamam, lalitapanchamam, dhaivatAngi and nishAdA. The pallavi lines were as follows (the ending word indicating the rAga in which the line was performed):

  • sapta swaramulu upAsimpavE manasA shadjAdi (rAgA pUrnashadjam)
  • sapta swaramulu upAsimpavE manasA rishabAdi (rAgA rishabapriyA)
  • sapta swaramulu upAsimpavE manasA gAndhArAdi (rAgA dEvagAndhAri)
  • sapta swaramulu upAsimpavE manasA madyamAdi (rAgA simhEndramadyamam)
  • sapta swaramulu upAsimpavE manasA panchamAdi (rAgA lalitapanchamam)
  • sapta swaramulu upAsimpavE manasA dhaivatAdi (rAgA dhaivatAngi)
  • sapta swaramulu upAsimpavE manasA nishAdAdi (rAgA nishAda)

The rAgam tAnam pallavi was followed by a sapta gati taniAvartanam played primarily by Sri Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman on the mridangam with Sri T.V. Vasan and Sri Sundar Kumar joining in the end when the kuraippu was done. As there are only 5 gatis (chatusram – 4, tisram – 3, kandam – 5, misram – 7 and sankIrnam – 9), Sri Sivaraman added two more using a combination of tisram + chatusram (3+4) and tisram + kandam (3+5) and termed it “gati dwayam” to match the 7 rAgAs being played by Sri Ravikiran. The tisram + chatusram combination was played as follows: for the first half of Adi tAlam, tisram was played and for the second half chatusram. The tisram + kandam combination was also played similarly.

The structure of the pallavi line was as follows (A=aksharAs): The pallavi started at samam. saptaswara was for 3.5A, mulu was for 1.5A, upAsimpavE was for 3A. The first half was thus completed. manasA started with a gap of 3A afterwards and was for 2A followed by one of the words shadjAdi, rishAbAdi, gAndhArAdi, madhyamAdi, panchamAdi, dhaivatAdi or nishAdAdi for 3A. Total = 3.5 A + 1.5A + 3A + 3A + 2A + 3A = 16A = akshara count of Adi tAlam (2 kalai).
